Powered by a 2nm Chip! Will These Five Major Upgrades to the iPhone 18 Pro Be a Win for Those Who Waited?

Is Apple finally going all out this time? As we enter 2026, there are still a few months to go before Apple’s fall event, but leaks about the iPhone 18 series are already flooding in.

Based on reports from the supply chain, this year’s iPhone 18 Pro series may be the most anticipated update in the past five years. Not only will it bid farewell to the “big pill” design that’s been in use for years, but it will also deliver top-tier performance, camera capabilities, and battery life across the board. Apple may even have a foldable device in store as its “One More Thing.”

If you're still debating whether to upgrade to the iPhone 17 or wait it out, reading this analysis should help you decide.

A Major Design Overhaul: The Dynamic Island Finally Gets “Slimmer,” Screen-to-Body Ratio Soars

Since the Dynamic Island was introduced with the iPhone 14 Pro series, while the interaction has been highly innovative, that “big pill” in the center of the screen has always been a major flaw in terms of aesthetics.

This time, the iPhone 18 Pro is finally set to revamp the Dynamic Island! According to the latest leaked supply chain data, the width of the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 18 Pro series will be reduced from 20.76 millimeters in the previous generation to 13.49 millimeters, shrinking its overall area by 35%. This means that the bulky “big pill” will transform into a sleek and compact “little capsule.” When playing games or watching movies in landscape mode, screen obstruction will be reduced by 41%, and the screen-to-body ratio will surpass 96%.

""

The key technology behind this breakthrough is precisely the “under-display Face ID” that Apple fans have been eagerly awaiting for years. Apple has hidden components such as the infrared flood illuminator beneath the screen, leaving only a tiny cutout for the front-facing camera—marking the company’s most significant step toward a truly bezel-less display.

""

Image source: WeChat Official Account "People Can't Be Naive"

Analysis: Although under-display camera technology still has some way to go, the introduction of under-display Face ID means the iPhone has finally bid farewell to the era of the “notch.” For users seeking the ultimate visual experience, this is undoubtedly the biggest reason to upgrade.

A Performance Surge: 2nm Chips + In-House Baseband—Is the Signal Finally Saved?

The core upgrade for every generation of iPhone has always been the chip, but the iPhone 18 Pro is taking things to a whole new level this time. It will be powered by the A20 Pro chip, manufactured using TSMC’s latest 2nm process technology. Compared to the previous generation’s 3nm process, the 2nm process is expected to deliver a performance boost of approximately 15% while reducing power consumption by up to 30%. For gaming enthusiasts and video creators, this means even smoother performance and longer battery life.

""

Even more exciting is that Apple’s in-house C2 baseband chip is finally set to be rolled out on a large scale. With the iPhone 18 Pro series, Apple may completely break free from its reliance on Qualcomm. If the rumors are true, the long-criticized issue of “poor iPhone signal” is expected to see a fundamental improvement.

""

Online Renderings of the iPhone 18 Pro Series and iPhone Fold Specifications

Analysis: The 2nm chip brings not only higher benchmark scores but also a significant leap in AI computing power; meanwhile, the integration of a proprietary baseband chip marks a crucial step for Apple in addressing a key weakness.

A Revolution in Imaging: Variable Aperture Is Here, Making Photography More Professional

Although the iPhone's video capabilities have always set the industry standard, when it comes to photography, Apple seems to have remained somewhat conservative in the face of Android flagships“ ”large sensors“ and ”variable apertures."
But all that is set to change with the iPhone 18 Pro. According to reports, the iPhone 18 Pro series will introduce variable aperture technology for the first time. By controlling the amount of light entering the camera through a mechanical mechanism, users will be able to achieve a more natural depth-of-field blur effect—with particularly noticeable improvements in Portrait Mode and night photography.

""

However, since the mechanical structure of a variable aperture takes up quite a bit of space, this high-end feature will likely be exclusive to the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Furthermore, while the main camera’s resolution remains at 48 megapixels, the sensor size will be further increased, boosting light intake by 40%. Combined with new imaging algorithms, the image quality of still photos will reach new heights.
Analysis: Apple has finally begun to address its physical hardware shortcomings beyond “computational photography.” If you’re a photography enthusiast, the Pro Max model might be worth considering this time around.

Battery Life and Charging: Say Goodbye to the Anxiety of “Charging Once a Day”

Battery life has always been a pain point for iPhone users. Although the iPhone 17 Pro Max already offers impressive battery life, the iPhone 18 Pro series has really stepped up its game this time. The iPhone 18 Pro Max’s battery capacity will surpass the 5,000 mAh mark for the first time, reaching the 5,000 mAh range. The Pro model will also feature a steel-cased battery with a capacity of around 4,500 mAh, offering not only greater capacity but also enhanced safety.

""

Charging speeds are finally moving beyond the “ancestral” 20W. Rumor has it that the iPhone 18 series will support 50W wired fast charging and 30W wireless fast charging, capable of charging up to 80% in just 30 minutes. Analysis: With a larger battery combined with the low power consumption of the 2nm chip—plus the long-awaited boost in charging speeds—iPhone 18 Pro users may finally be able to put their battery life anxiety behind them.

The Ultimate Easter Egg: Is the Foldable iPhone Finally Coming? In addition to the standard iPhone 18 Pro series, another major highlight this fall is Apple’s all-new product category—the iPhone Fold.

""

This foldable smartphone is expected to feature a book-style design, with a 7.8-inch inner screen and a 5.3-inch outer screen, and its thickness when unfolded is likely to be less than 4.8 mm. It will also be powered by the A20 Pro chip and feature a titanium alloy hinge, designed to address the issue of screen creases.

""

It's worth noting that, in order to make the device thinner and lighter, the iPhone Fold may ditch Face ID in favor of side-mounted Touch ID for unlocking.

Buying Advice: Should You Wait? Finally, the question everyone is most concerned about: Should you buy the iPhone 17 now or wait for the iPhone 18? If you’re an iPhone 14 Pro or earlier user, the iPhone 18 Pro is worth the wait. With a 2nm chip, under-display Face ID, a smaller Dynamic Island, and a larger battery, this generation’s upgrades are truly significant.

""

If you're an iPhone 17 Pro user, while the performance improvements are noticeable, the main differences in the actual user experience likely come down to the front-facing design and better signal strength. Whether or not you should upgrade depends on how much you value these features.

Based on current leaks, 2026 is shaping up to be a big year for Apple’s product lineup. Not only will the regular flagship models undergo major redesigns, but the addition of foldable phones is also set to shake up the high-end market. So the question is: Should you go with the well-established iPhone 18 Pro, or try out the all-new iPhone Fold?
